Frequently asked questions
Answers to some of the most common questions about our community
What is Montessori International Student Council?
Montessori International Student Council is a global community for Montessori students, connecting schools and Montessori organizations through a student council framework. The community aims to facilitate collaboration, mutual inspiration, and shared initiatives across schools and national borders.
Who can take part in our community?
Montessori International Student Council is a community for all Montessori students, connected through a student council framework. Montessori schools and national Montessori organizations can join through our membership options to support and participate in the community.
What is the collaborative platform?
Members of our community gain access to a collaborative digital platform where students, together with their guides, can explore inspiring work, exchange ideas, participate in initiatives and events, and connect with Montessori communities nationally and internationally. The platform also serves as a hub for National Montessori Student Councils, enabling them to launch initiatives, surveys, and events while fostering dialogue, cooperation, and student participation among Montessori schools nationally and internationally.
Do schools need to have a National Montessori Student Council in their country to participate?
No. Schools can join and participate regardless of whether a National Montessori Student Council exists in their country. A school membership provides access to the international community and collaborative platform. In countries where a National Montessori Student Council has been established, schools also gain access to a dedicated national space within the platform, creating additional opportunities for communication, collaboration, and student participation at the national level and in their own language.
Why should national Montessori organizations establish a National Montessori Student Council?
Maria Montessori argued that children and young people are not merely future citizens; they are citizens of the world whose needs, rights, and voices must be recognized and represented. Montessori International Student Council builds on Maria Montessori’s legacy by creating a global structure where students are not only heard, but actively collaborate, take initiative, and contribute across schools, countries, and cultures. National Montessori Student Councils provide a framework for strengthening student participation, connecting schools, and ensuring that children’s voices play an active role in shaping the future of Montessori education and society. We provide resources, guidance, and ongoing support to help national Montessori organizations establish and develop a National Montessori Student Council.
Who can become a representative in a National Montessori Student Council?
All Montessori students may apply to contribute to their National Montessori Student Council. Representatives are not elected to lead other students. Instead, they serve as connection points and ambassadors for the Montessori student community, helping to strengthen collaboration, communication, and student participation nationally and internationally. National Montessori Student Councils aim to reflect the diversity of the Montessori community. Representatives are selected based on applications, with the goal of ensuring geographical representation, gender balance, representation across planes of development, experience, and an overall balanced composition of the council. To ensure continuity, representatives are typically appointed for two-year terms. New members are introduced on a rolling basis so that experienced representatives remain on the council while new students bring fresh perspectives. Additional representatives may be appointed when needed. National Montessori Student Councils are supported by dedicated Advisors, a group of Montessori educators invited by the national Montessori organization to guide and support the council’s work. Advisors help facilitate meetings, provide mentorship, and ensure that students have the support needed to develop initiatives, collaborate effectively, and represent the voices of their fellow students.
